  8. I don’t know if I like this stuff about lower safety sadadtrns in Asia. In licensing terms, as I understand it, several Chinese airlines I’ve flown have the same certification as Qantas. Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific have good records, as do most of the Japanese airlines. Why should we think that Asianization is a bad thing in terms of safety? I think this is patronizing.Also, even if it remained Australian, Qantas needs to employ staff capable of speaking Asian languages for popular tourist routes. I don’t quite see the objections to it maintaining an Asian hub and staff based overseas. In any other industry this would be seen as setting up a branch office in another country, or foreign direct investment, etc. We don’t expect mining and manufacturing companies to only employ Australians in their subsidiary operations, if we want Qantas to expand why should we expect different from them?This talk of Asianization smacks of protectionism and Aussie-jobs-for-Aussie-workers. But I do think, if Qantas want all the benefits of international competition on labour, they should be forced to suffer all the consequences of international competition on services within Australia i.e. open domestic services to foreign airlines. Maybe Gillard should have offered Joyce that deal and seen how quickly he agreed to negotiate with the unions or should just stick him with it anyway after his skullduggery last weekend.
